04 Feb Stop bad Protein Shaker smell with this 10c solution
Protein shakers have been designed to do one thing: mix.
The design of many protein shakers on the market have hard corners, grooves, latches and screw mechanisms, which are all very hard to clean.
The smells you’re getting from your protein shaker is from a build up bacteria that are sitting right in these hard to clean areas. After using your protein shaker, the pH level on the surface of the shaker is primed for bacterial growth. Any source of protein or BCCAs (Whey or Vegetable) is susceptible to bacteria forming.

So, we now know that the smells from your protein shaker comes from tiny, thriving bacteria. Delightful.
Warm soapy water is good for cleaning most bacteria, however it doesn’t go a great job of stoping the odour from coming back. This is because the pH levels aren’t brought back to a balanced levels, allowing for the return of the bacteria and the dank smell of your protein shaker.
A real cleaning solution is using the magic of 3rd grade science.

How to remove bad protein shaker smell
So now we have our secret weapon – Acetic Acid. Follow these steps:
- Rinse your protein shaker with warm water.
It’s important that you do not have any left over liquid or protein powder stuck to your shaker. You may need to use a bottle brush to dislodge any stuck protein powder. Make sure you check around the latches and grooves. - Place your protein shaker and lid into a large bowl in your sink. Make sure you have unscrewed the lid and opened the mouth piece.
Never seal the lid while creating mixing the two together and always do this in a sink – remember science class? - Sprinkle 2 Tablespoon of Bi Carb Soda inside the shaker cup and around your lid.
Place any left over Bi Card Soda at the bottom of your bowl. - Fill the bowl with 1/3 White Vinegar and 2/3 Water until both your protein shaker and lid is fully submerged
You don’t need a lot of White vinegar, but enough to completely remove any Bi-Carb powder. Use water to dilute the cleaning solution. - Leave for 5 minutes
Let the bubbles do the cleaning and kill off any bacteria. - Wash with warm water.
Go on, smell it. Smells like, nothingness.
Rinse and Repeat
Your shaker will begin to smell bad again after a few uses – there’s nothing stopping that. But the good thing is knowing that this quick solution costs less than 10 cents to make and is 100% chemical free.
